Somatic Anxiety

Somatic Anxiety is characterized by the experience of anxiety primarily through physical sensations rather than through emotional or cognitive distress.

Somatic anxiety can present as chronic muscle tension, restlessness, or an involuntary urge to move, even when the individual may not consciously recognize their anxious feelings. This disconnect between physical sensations and emotional states can create significant discomfort and confusion for those affected. Somatic anxiety often arises from unresolved stress, trauma, or ongoing pressures in life, causing the body to remain in a heightened state of alertness and respond to overlooked stressors. If not addressed, chronic tension associated with somatic anxiety can escalate into physical health issues.

Somatic anxiety can range from mild discomfort to significant impairment in daily functioning, affecting relationships and work and making it difficult to relax. Common symptoms include difficulty concentrating, feelings of distress or irritability, panic attacks, and physical symptoms such as stomach upset, sweating, a rapid heart rate, and sleep disturbances.

Effective treatment for anxiety typically requires a multifaceted approach. Truhearted Counseling offers holistic options for somatic anxiety, including walk-and-talk therapy—where therapy takes place outdoors, somatic therapy, and polyvagal yoga, which focuses on exploring the body with awareness of tension or trauma and moving in specific ways to address those areas. These two approaches may also incorporate progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help process emotionally stuck memories or trauma that may be impacting individuals by storing it in their bodies. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of talk therapy that aims to identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors.

Combining these holistic somatic therapies with cognitive techniques often yields the best results. Furthermore, individuals struggling with anxiety may find that medication management under the guidance of a healthcare professional can be beneficial in alleviating symptoms. By addressing various dimensions of anxiety, individuals can work toward regaining control over their lives and improving their overall well-being.
