This article discusses the significant role of spirituality in human experience, acknowledging that while it does not serve as an evidence-based therapy, it is nonetheless an important aspect of mental health. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) recognizes the value of spirituality’s contribution to well-being and resilience. Research has demonstrated that spirituality can provide a sense of purpose, community, and coping skills, essential in navigating life's difficulties.
When spirituality is absent, individuals may find themselves lacking one of several potential areas of support, thereby increasing their vulnerability to stress and mental health issues. By recognizing and valuing the role of spirituality, we can foster a more comprehensive understanding of well-being and support the integration of spiritual practices in therapeutic settings when appropriate.
Truhearted Counseling does not discriminate against any religious belief or unbelieving spirituality and will be supportive. However, Truhearted is primarily informed by Christian and Jewish faiths, as well as non-faith. Human beings are inherently designed to flourish and deepen their spirituality and relationships with one another. Each person embodies a beautiful duality of the physical and spiritual realms. This duality is intricately interwoven throughout the brain’s complex network of neurons and brain structures, as well as the body's responses to experiences, and, consequently, both the body and brain interact with each other. The other part of this duality is the spiritual side of human beings. Humans are more than the complexity of science, but they also encompass the complexity of unseen spiritual influences is even greater. Spirituality, regardless of one's faith or lack thereof, significantly influences internal emotions and drives alongside the prompts of the nervous system, influencing emotions, thoughts, and behavioral choices.
Neuroplasticity represents the remarkable capacity of the brain to reconfigure neural pathways, guiding our thoughts and behaviors toward harmonious patterns, which are a natural spiritual phenomenon. By actively cultivating one's mental processes and fostering healthier thinking patterns, one opens up to a life enriched with positive thoughts, feelings, and actions that resonate with one's spiritual convictions. Counseling provides a vital sanctuary for individuals to explore their thoughts and emotions related to various life domains—whether it be work, home, health, or relationships. A therapist attuned to religious perspectives can help create a safe haven where clients can confront life's profound questions regarding meaning, personal identity, buried emotions, past traumas, and experiences of spiritual abuse while promoting healthy spiritual integration.
A 2024 Gallup poll reveals that around three-quarters of Americans identify with a specific religious faith. Among these individuals, 68% affiliate with some form of Christianity, while 7% resonate with non-Christian religions such as Judaism. Additionally, 22% express no religious preference, with 3% opting not to answer the question (Gallup Poll, March 29, 2024). Counseling licensing boards have historically restricted clinicians from incorporating religious elements into therapy sessions. However, it has become increasingly clear that ignoring the spiritual dimension or a client's religious aspect of their life can be ethically problematic, given the vital role spirituality plays in many individuals' lives and experiences. Yet, even amidst this shift, only 20% of mental health professionals possess adequate spiritual or religious knowledge or willingness to support their clients in this regard. This gap persists even though most Americans view spiritual and religious beliefs as fundamental to their lives (Spirituality in Clinical Practice, Vol. 3, No. 2, 2016).
Truhearted Counseling strives to be spiritually and culturally humble, promoting spiritual integration (whether religious or not), and will also assist individuals who have experienced spiritual injury and are seeking healing. In a world where the connection between mind, body, and spirit is often dismissed or overlooked, embracing spiritual health is not merely beneficial but necessary for holistic well-being. Additionally, Truhearted welcomes individuals from all faiths, including those without any faith background.
